Aranha Barcelona: The Journey of Yan Cabral

Aranha Barcelona: The Journey of Yan Cabral

Key Takeaways

  • Yan Cabral grew from grassroots training to leading Aranha

  • He went 15–3 in professional MMA, competing in the UFC

  • MAAT was co-created to solve his academy’s struggles

Introduction

From training barefoot on the grass in rural Brazil to founding one of Spain’s most respected martial arts academies, Yan Cabral’s journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is rooted in humility and passion. Today, he leads Aranha Barcelona and heads the Aranha Association across Europe, shaping the next generation of combat sports athletes with the same dedication that drove his own rise.

Humble Beginnings on the Mat

Cabral’s first encounter with Jiu Jitsu was unconventional, yet deeply passionate.

“I started training Jiu-Jitsu in 1993,”

he recalls.

“A friend of mine who trained in the city used to come visit me in the countryside, and we’d train each other literally on the grass.”

Yan built his foundation outdoors, guided by friendship, curiosity, and countless hours of watching the early UFC events. The unstructured beginnings only deepened his appreciation for the art.

Climbing the Ranks: From Nova União to the UFC

He started his professional mixed martial arts career in 2007. Cabral quickly rose to prominence with a perfect 10-0 record in his first four years, all by submission and none going beyond the second round.

In Rio de Janeiro, he trained with the Nova União team, alongside two UFC champions, José Aldo and Renan Barão, sharpening his game among some of the best fighters in the world.

Training at Nova União gave him access to a world-class environment, which he used to prepare for battles in organizations like DREAM and ultimately the UFC.

Building Aranha Barcelona and Leading in Europe

In the late 1990s, while assisting with classes in Brazil, Cabral met Eric, a French practitioner and founder of the Aranha Association. That meeting would shape the next two decades of his life.

“He invited me to spend a season with him in 1996”

Cabral says.

That season turned into a journey. After helping Eric’s academy grow, Cabral eventually relocated to Barcelona, where the natural progression led him to open his own school: Aranha Barcelona.

Since its inception, the academy has grown steadily, known for its high-level instruction and community oriented culture, Aranha Barcelona is now a pillar of the Spanish and European BJJ scene.

Turning a Struggle into Innovation with MAAT

Cabral’s connection to MAAT runs deeper than most. At the time, he was struggling with the limitations of the app he was using, an App from Brazil that lacked the flexibility and tools needed to effectively run his growing academy. Managing student records, graduations, and payments had become time-consuming and inefficient.

“MAAT is a story that I’m actually part of”

he explains
Stefano, one of of MAAT's founders trained with Cabral in Barcelona and saw firsthand the challenges he was facing. During a conversation about these frustrations Stefano offered a solution

"He told me he was a developer and could make something better"

That conversation turned into collaboration; Cabral provided feedback from a coach’s perspective, helping shape a platform designed specifically for combat sports academies.

“Today, it helps me a lot in managing and controlling the academy. It’s the best app on the market right now”

says Cabral.

Conclusion

Yan Cabral’s journey, from grassroots training on a field in Brazil to international MMA success and founding one of Spain’s premier martial arts gyms, is nothing short of inspiring. His story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of community.

As his academy continues to thrive, so does his partnership with MAAT, a gym management software born directly from the needs of coaches like him.
